Minecraft Java Edition received updated official PC requirements in July 2026. The important change is not one magic GPU model: Mojang now describes separate minimum and recommended targets, memory rules for integrated graphics, and a Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics baseline. This guide turns those specifications into a buying and troubleshooting decision.
Quick decision
For a new PC, aim for the recommended tier: six modern CPU cores, 16 GB RAM and a supported GPU with roughly 6 GB VRAM. The minimum tier is designed around 1080p/30 FPS on Fast settings; it is not a promise of heavy shaders, large modpacks or high render distances.

Why integrated graphics needs more system RAM
A discrete graphics card has its own video memory. Integrated graphics borrows a portion of normal system memory for graphics work, leaving less RAM for Java, the operating system and background applications. That is why the official minimum distinguishes 8 GB with discrete graphics from 12 GB with integrated graphics. For a laptop purchase, 16 GB is the safer practical floor because memory may be soldered and impossible to upgrade later.
Vulkan 1.3: the compatibility check that model names miss
Mojang's updated requirement explicitly calls for Vulkan 1.3 support. Do not assume support from VRAM capacity alone. Check all three layers:
- GPU hardware: identify the exact model, not “Intel graphics” or “NVIDIA laptop GPU”.
- Operating system: confirm the supported OS version and architecture.
- Driver: install a current driver from the device or GPU vendor and confirm that Vulkan 1.3 is exposed.
A game may launch below the new minimum today, but Mojang warns that performance and quality are not guaranteed and future rendering transitions can remove that margin. “It opens” is therefore not the same as “it meets the supported baseline”.
What the official targets do not cover
Shaders
Real-time shader packs can multiply GPU load. Choose hardware based on the specific pack, resolution and preset, not vanilla requirements.
Large modpacks
Hundreds of mods can increase memory, CPU and storage demands. Follow the pack author's requirement and leave RAM for the operating system.
High render distance
More chunks increase CPU, memory and GPU pressure. The official target does not promise maximum distance.
Hosting and playing
Running a local server and client on one PC requires extra CPU threads and memory beyond a client-only target.
How to evaluate the PC you already own
- Record CPU, total RAM, GPU model, VRAM, operating system and display resolution.
- Confirm whether the game is using the discrete GPU on laptops with hybrid graphics.
- Update the graphics driver before diagnosing a rendering/API failure.
- Create a clean vanilla installation and test the official target settings: 1080p Fast for minimum, 1080p Fancy for recommended.
- Measure a representative world after chunks finish loading; opening the title screen is not a performance test.
- Add mods, resource packs or shaders only after the vanilla baseline is stable.
Buying priorities by use case
Vanilla survival and light multiplayer
Prioritise a modern six-core CPU, 16 GB RAM, SSD storage and a GPU comfortably above the minimum. This gives the operating system and future updates room without paying for hardware you will not use.
Performance mods and medium modpacks
CPU consistency and 16–32 GB system memory matter more than an oversized graphics card when no heavy shader is used. Never allocate all installed RAM to Java; leave capacity for the OS and launcher.
High-quality shaders or higher resolution
The graphics card becomes the main budget item. Look for independent benchmarks that use the same shader, preset, resolution and render distance you intend to play. A generic “Minecraft FPS” number is not transferable.
Laptop
Check sustained cooling, power limits, upgradeable memory and which GPU drives the display. Two laptops with the same GPU name can perform differently because of wattage and thermal design.
